Emerging technology areas such as cloud computing, analytics and big data are being identified as the new growth frontiers. There is a big noise made and heard about cloud computing, big data and analytics. As said and heard, they will eat into a lot of IT jobs. Similar was the clamor heard when computers arrived in India but machines didn’t replace human labor; in fact, they converted them into much better-paid IT professionals. Whenever a new technology appears, such fears start circulating. Candle makers went out of business, when light bulbs arrived, and there were similar protectionaist sentiments for candle makers, too, back then.
Experts see a similarly renewed ray of hope in cloud computing, analytics, and big data, for youngsters eying career in IT sector. Fear is silly; on the contrary, it’ll prove to be a big new pie of which a huge share awaits India. CLOUD COMPUTING: Jobs Aplenty
Microsoft sponsored study by IDC estimates that last year alone, IT cloud services helped organizations of all sizes and all verticals around the world generate more than $400 billion in revenue and 1.5 million new jobs. The study goes to the extent of predicting that the total cumulative 6.7 million jobs generated by Cloud Computing worldwide by the year end 2012 will exceed 13.8 Million by 2015.
News is that the cloud computing will generate approximately 14 million jobs worldwide and ‘Good News’ is that of this 14 million pie the biggest share - nearly half of it - 6.8 million jobs will be generated only in India and China combined. That looks like our chance to grab the most.
Another study by EMC and Zinnov Management Consulting estimates the current cloud computing market in India at $400 million and expects it to touch $4.5 billion by 2015. The study anticipates cloud to create 100,000 new IT jobs in India by 2015, as compared to 10,000 today. Estimates come with a rider: companies are currently under-skilled in addressing cloud computing implementations and professionals need to address the educational update. And if you can read between the lines, there is a big opportunity awaiting.
Besides technical positions, marketing and management of cloud-based solutions will also be required, which in turn is bound to create a host of new vacancies.
High Demand + Low Supply = BIG SALARY
Future of cloud is already there on the wall. IT engineers who can write cloud-ready applications, can account for provision and maintenance of the infrastructure at the back-end, are earning better and having an edge over their peers. VMware-certified engineers – a company that conducts course to enhance technical skills for cloud technologies – are enjoying a premium of seven to 10% in the industry.
Niche roles in cloud computing, e-commerce or risk analytics are already much in demand, and have seen pay hikes of up to 30% this year. Even in a slowing market, where job cuts and least salary hikes are prevailing, these professionals are enjoying robust increments.
According to a salary guide for the Asia Pacific, by staffing firm Kelly Services, permanent positions in roles like cloud computing architect, risk analyst and ERP technical consultant have seen an increase of up to 30%.
‘BIG-DATA’ -- Next Big Thing
The 'Big Data' industry -- the ability to access, analyze and use humungous volumes of data through specific technology – is also looking forward to a whole new army of data workers globally.
Gautam Munshi, who runs an Analytics Training Institute in Bangalore tells, "Analytics and big-data skills do not exist in adequate numbers in India and in the industry as a whole, as of now."
Having over 100 students, including several top-level executives, Munshi says, "Big IT firms are investing huge money and time on training employees on these skills. These areas are bound to boom."
"Rise of analytics, big-data, mobile applications and other new technologies have a demand-supply issue," says Abhijit Bhaduri, Chief Learning Officer at India's third-largest software firm Wipro Technologies. "Professionals are bound to pick up these skills as this sector evolves and clients define their requirements," he added.
DATA ANALYTICS: Much in Demand
According to a McKinsey study, the US alone would face a deficit of 192,000 data scientists against its requirement of 490,000 by 2018.
The demand has arisen because global enterprises today use only 5% of the data they create and store.
As for India, it will require a minimum of 100,000 data scientists in the next couple of years, in addition to scores of data managers and data analysts, to support the fast emerging Big Data space.
Though India doesn't have enough of this talent at the moment, tech firms like EMC, Oracle, IBM, etc., under their academic alliance programs, are already working or planning to work with universities in India and overseas to help introduce full-length electives or crash courses on various facets of Big Data. Training outfits like NIIT, Aptech, etc., too are exploring the space.
With jobs in abundance, the new technological areas are bound to offer best prospects to those looking forward to making a career in IT field.
