A massive fire broke out in the Ghazipur slum area on 30th January 2012 that gutted 500 dwellings. This is the second time in the last two years that fire has caused damage in the area.  The area, which is home to a low income community that makes a living by selling kabaadi, is quite prone to catching fire owing to its proximity to a low reeling high density electric wire. Around 2000 people were left with no option but to sleep in the open on a chilly winter night.

While Chintan, an NGO did step in to respond, police officials did not have any information about the situation.

Why do some citizens of the country have to face this fate year after year? Will this ever stop?
